Fandom: Kimi ha Pet
I'll say right off that this is one of Tokyopop's most annoying renames: Tramps Like Us does not reflect the quirky, adorable nature of the original title "You're My Pet". Was the provocative nature of the name too much for Tokyopop? As the target audience, I love the idea of having a guy as my "pet" - at least in a manga! I stumbled upon Kodansha's webpage for Kimi wa Pet a couple years ago, at a time when very few shoujo series were licensed in English and none for young women. The premise sounded fun, and had the exotic appeal of a manga that I knew would never be available to me. So glad I was wrong!
Kodansha says: "Sumire is a hard-working career woman for a large newspaper. One day she finds a beautiful 20-year-old boy lying in front of her apartment, who claims to be a ballet dancer and says he has no place to go because he is broke. Sumire takes him in, names him Momo and starts raising him as a pet. Momo is always waiting for her when she comes home. Sometimes he sleeps on her lap; sometimes they even take naps together.... Life with Momo helps Sumire relax and forget about her stressful work life. And yet, for all their affection, Momo is just a pet; the two never get physical. Sumire's boyfriend is Hasumi, a colleague of hers and an elite businessman who is both handsome and kind. However, Sumire always feels nervous in front of Hasumi because she likes him so much. The only person she seems to be able to relax around and be herself in front of is Momo."
