Socrates in Love is a teen "sick lit" melodrama* which began as a novel written Kyoichi Katayama. The story was adapted into a manga, a Japanese film and drama, and a Korean film remake: see the Wikipedia entry for details.
*A YA fiction genre that works on notions dating back to Victorian times in which femininity and illness were strongly linked. The image of the beautiful, self-sacrificing sick/dying girl who inspires others with her (stereotypically feminine) patient goodness continues to be popular (in both North America and Asia) in a genre of fiction for girls sometimes known as "teen trauma".
